Thousands of miners and union supporters march in protest in León, Spain. Spain’s miners are fighting for their jobs and the future of their communities. Their campaign kicked off at the end of May and has seen strikes, road blockades, and mine sit-ins involving up to 8,000 mineworkers from 40 coal mines in northern Spain. They are backed by mining unions within both of Spain’s major labour federations — Confederación Sindical de Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) and Unión General de Trabajadores (UGT). Miners and riot police have been clashing in Spain in the northern regions of Asturies and León after workers unions and government failed to reach agreement in talks that ended May 29. Coal miners are now on an indefinite strike, and a general strike in all Spanish mines has been called for June 18. Miners have proposed June 18 as a day of solidarity actions around Spain and worldwide, they ask for solidarity! The ongoing revolt has already been compared with the 1934 anarchist uprising in Asturies. (Photo by J.Casares / REUTERS)
